At the upcoming 31st General Assembly and Conventions in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, held 25 June – 2 July 2027, the global Church of the Nazarene comes together for a time of worship, reflection, celebration and vision casting, alongside conducting the necessary quadrennial business of the denomination.

Part of this special week are the Local Church Ministries Conventions, which is comprised of the Nazarene Discipleship International (NDI), Nazarene Missions International (NMI), and Nazarene Youth International (NYI) conventions. This article explores the NYI Convention.

When and where is the NYI Convention?

The NYI Convention will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Kansas City Convention Center. The convention opens the 31st General Assembly and Conventions in conjunction with the rest of the local church ministries for an opening service at 8 a.m. central time on Friday 25 June. The NYI Convention will conclude following the quadrennial address delivered the morning of Monday 28 June.

Who attends the NYI Convention?

The Global NYI Convention is a representative gathering of Nazarene Youth International leaders and elected district delegates. Delegates must be members of both the Church of the Nazarene and NYI and be at least 12 years old. District delegates must also be members of, and reside within, the district they represent. The convention includes the Global NYI Council, NYI director, regional officers and youth coordinators, along with elected district delegates.

While business conducted during the NMI Convention is specifically for those indicated above, any member of the Church of the Nazarene is invited to attend any of the NMI plenary sessions and workshops.

What happens at the NYI Convention?

The Global NYI Convention includes inspirational worship sessions, regional and delegate caucuses, plenary sessions, training workshops, cultural celebrations, and opportunities to hear ministry reports from global and regional leaders. As part of the convention’s official business, NYI delegates consider and vote on resolutions related to the structure and strategic direction of Global NYI and participate in the election of the next Global NYI Council chair.

The gathering will include worship services and messages from God’s Word in different languages and styles, reflecting the rich cultures and traditions across the globe.

NYI also carries on the tradition of announcing and promoting the next Third Wave, highlighting the country and region where it will be held. Recognizing the challenges that visas and international travel can create, we value the opportunity for delegates to participate either in person or online, carrying forward a hybrid approach that helps ensure our global family can participate fully.

Why is the NYI Convention important?

“We aim to see young people around the world transformed by Christ and mobilized for his mission,” said David Gonzalez, Global NYI director. “We want to create a Global NYI Convention experience that truly reflects the diversity, unity, and vitality of our global family, giving delegates the opportunity to shape the vision of the Global NYI. We hope to bridge distances and break barriers, making space for more young leaders to be seen, heard, and empowered.”
