In mid-October 2025, the remnants of Typhoon Halong struck the coast of western Alaska, bringing hurricane-force winds, torrential rain, and storm surges up to six feet above normal high tide. At least one person died, and two remain missing. More than a dozen communities reported severe flooding, and nearly 2,000 people were evacuated to larger cities, many of whom were forced to flee with only a single bag of belongings.
Upon arrival in evacuation centers, families needed urgent assistance. Nazarene churches and compassionate ministry centers across the Alaska District quickly rallied to care for those displaced. Volunteers assembled and distributed Crisis Care Kits filled with essential hygiene items, along with warm, plush blankets, to provide comfort and dignity to those displaced.
“It’s just devastating what’s happening,” shared District Superintendent Hunter Mizer. “I’m just grateful to be a part of a church that’s able to step in immediately and make a difference and meet the needs.”
Each blanket and kit included a tag with encouraging scripture and contact information for nearby churches, as well as the New Hope Compassionate Ministry Center and Frontline Compassionate Ministry Center, ensuring evacuees knew where to find continued support. Local churches are continuing to collect offerings to support future initiatives.
How You Can Help
Pray
Support families and individuals who have lost their homes and belongings due to these floods. Pray for comfort, strength, and hope as they are forced to remain displaced for the near future. Remember children, the elderly, the disabled, and those with health conditions that will make displacement difficult. Pray for those suffering with traumatic memories and emotions. Pray for the churches and compassionate ministry centers serving evacuees; may God bless their efforts, multiply their resources, and reveal God’s love through their service.
