The Church of the Nazarene in Zambia has significantly grown in recent years, leading delegates to the Zambia Luapula Northern District Assembly to vote to form a new district. The new district was named Zambia North District during the 20th district assembly, held in Mansa, Zambia, on 25 October 2025.
The growth has been significant mainly in parts of Luapula, Northern, and Muchinga provinces, with many professing their faith in Jesus after watching the JESUS Film and participating in revivals.
The expansion brought in challenges as well, especially with just one district office to oversee the events and affairs of all the churches across northern Zambia. In fact, the church that is the farthest from the district centre is over 1,000 km away, making it difficult for the district office to assist them.
The foundation for the Zambia Luapula Northern District was laid back in 1999 when the Lord called Francis Mwansa to leave the city church and start a new work in the northern regions of Zambia. Mwansa and his family trusted the Lord, although not knowing where to stay or who would take care of their needs.
With the JESUS Film tool at their disposal, they began in Mansa, the provincial headquarters of Luapula Province, with only five people, including Mwansa and his wife. They moved from one location to another, winning the lost for Christ.
The church began to grow, expanding to two more provinces. Today, the work has grown to more than 200 churches, thus creating the need to divide the district.
The Church of the Nazarene in Africa and Zambia thanks God for this exponential growth in the northern part of Zambia.
