Amazon District evangelism team reaches isolated communities through boat ministry

by | 01 Jul 2019

Amazon District Superintendent Jean Norgueira led a boating evangelism team on their first trip of the year down the Baixo River in Brazil to reach the distant and isolated indigenous communities.

All evangelism team members are from the church in Manaus, which is situated between the indigenous communities of Barreirinha and Maues. There are more than 200 communities along the river without a church and without access to the gospel, making Manaus a very effective evangelism hub.

This was the second time this boat — Jesus the Hope 2 — was used for remote evangelism. The team left Manaus and sailed past the city of Itacoatiara to enter the Parana do Ramos River, where they shared the gospel with several communities. This leg of the trip took approximately 17 hours.

The team set sail the following day into the indigenous country of Andira. This region is bordered by the Andria River and is primarily populated by the Satere Manue people, a group native to the Amazon region.

District Nazarene Missions International team members recently received the Satere Maue translation of the JESUS film. The translated materials were donated by the Church of the Nazarene in Piracicaba and will allow the church to advance evangelism and church planting in the local communities and cities along the Baixo River.

The team delivered two sets of the translated materials and helped establish two JESUS film evangelism teams during the trip. These teams are composed of local church members who volunteered to evangelize their own people. These are the first indigenous Satere Maue JESUS Film Harvest Partners teams in Brazil.

This trip also helped to map the area and configure the boat’s navigation system so they could begin planning the next phase of evangelism and church planting.

“This is a dream come true to see the boat come to our region to help us to take the gospel to the most isolated indigenous people,” said Alexandre Fernandes, local pastor. “When we put our faith in God, He will send the necessary resources.”
