Many Brazilian cities have been affected by heavy rains and subsequent flooding. S.O.S Brazil was created by the country’s Council of Superintendents of the Church of the Nazarene in partnership with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries to support those in need.

Torrential rains have pummeled Brazil’s mountainous region, leading to significant flooding and landslides that have killed many and left even more without homes. Brazil’s most recent landslide in the city of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, left 102 dead, and more than 300 people are now homeless.

The first time S.O.S. Brazil went into action, leaders targeted the cities in the state of Bahia affected by the December floods. The downpours caused two dams to break and flood, affecting more the 470,000 people across 116 different cities in Bahia.

In total, families from six cities and three towns received donations of food, clothing, and household items. One of the families who received aid from S.O.S. thanked the Church of the Nazarene.

“The people of Lagoinha are in great need, so we thank everyone who donated,” they said. “We really appreciate it, and keep doing it so that God continues to pour out His blessings.”

The coordinator of the project, Reginaldo Guerra, emphasized the importance of unity at during these times and said that “together, we can make a difference.”
