PLNU seeks new women's golf coach

PLNU seeks new women's golf coach

by | 14 May 2015

The Point Loma Nazarene University Athletics Department announced Jacqui McSorley will not return as head coach for the Sea Lions women's golf team during 2015-2016 season.

"We greatly appreciate Jacqui's efforts these past five years," said Ethan Hamilton, PLNU Athletics director. "She had a challenging task in starting a program from scratch, but I continue to be very excited about the future of our women's golf program to ensure the best experience possible for our student-athletes."

McSorley had been with the PLNU women's golf team since its inception in 2011-2012 and is the only coach the program has ever known. She helped guide the Sea Lions to a fourth place finish at the PacWest Championships the past two seasons, and during the 2013-2014 season four Sea Lions captured All-PacWest Conference honors.

This season, PLNU won its first two tournament championships, the Cal State San Marcos Classic in the fall and the Cal State San Marcos Invite in the spring. PLNU had two individuals capture titles this season — Haley Fuller won the PLNU Fall Preview at Torrey Pines and Kathleen Crossley took the title at the Cal State San Marcos Invite.

The PLNU women's golf team also thrived in the classroom in 2013-2014 under McSorley. Andrea Mersino was named to the WGCA All-American Scholar Athlete team, and the PLNU team earned NCCAA Scholar Team honors with a team GPA of 3.43.

A native of San Diego, McSorley played professionally and has taught golf for nearly 25 years. She is currently an LPGA Class A member who teaches at Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. McSorley prepped at Point Loma High School, where she was captain of the boy's golf team in 1980. That same year she was selected as the San Diego Junior Golfer of the Year and the San Diego PGA Section Player of the Year. She received a golf scholarship and played collegiately at the University of Southern California, earning all-conference status as a senior.

PLNU will immediately begin a national search for a replacement.
