Kentucky DS Gene Wells passes away

by | 05 Sep 2014

D. Eugene Wells, superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene's Kentucky District, passed away September 2. He was 63.

Wells was hospitalized in Clarksville, Tennessee, August 29 following a heart attack. In addition to severe blockage in two arteries, he had pneumonia. After several days of improvement, Wells was taken off a ventilator but went into cardiac arrest and never recovered.

He was appointed Kentucky district superintendent in 2010. Wells previously pastored the Science Hill, Kentucky, Church of the Nazarene; East Brainerd Church of the Nazarene in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Macon, Georgia, Trinity Church of the Nazarene; Alexandria, Louisiana, First Church of the Nazarene; and Glasgow, Kentucky, Trinity Church of the Nazarene. He also served as a registered evangelist in Illinois, Georgia, and Kentucky.

"I had the privilege to partner with Rev. Wells in the service to the church over the years and I always appreciated his commitment to the Lord, to the Church, and to the lost," said Gustavo Crocker, general superintendent in jurisdiction for Kentucky. "Whether as an evangelist, a pastor, or as a district superintendent, Gene exhibited the love of God in all of his endeavors. In fact, at the last assembly of the Kentucky District, Gene gave one of the most eloquent messages on the primacy of love. This is who Gene was: A loving servant who passionately proclaimed the love of Christ. We will miss him greatly."

Wells is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their three children: Greg, Justin, and Sarah.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Science Hill Church of the Nazarene. A funeral service will be held Monday, September 8, at 11:00 a.m. at the Science Hill church. Graveside services and burial will be held Tuesday, September 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton County Memorial Park, 8900 Dallas Hollow Rd., Soddy-Daisy, TN 37379.
