New Classrooms in Guatemala

Members of the Church of the Nazarene in Senahú, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, rebuilt the Nazarene Discipleship International classrooms in just 18 days. Nearly 200 people gather in these classrooms to learn more about God in their native language, Q'eqchi', and Spanish.

Built more than 30 years ago, the facilities had limited resources and were in poor condition due to deterioration.

"[I am] grateful to God for the provision, for our leaders — especially the pastor — for the good management of resources and the savings that could be made even in the midst of the closure of the churches due to the COVID-19 pandemic," said Alberto Coc, a member of the church.

The leaders of the church saw the progressive deterioration of the facilities and began saving money four years ago so as to carry out the reconstruction of the classrooms. They started work in March 2022 with a group of 50 volunteers who are all members of the congregation.

On 3 April, in a festive atmosphere, accompanied by the marimba group Dulces Melodías (Sweet Melodies), the new classrooms were officially opened. Pastor Milián cut the symbolic ribbon, and District Superintendent Ignacio Quej Isem offered a prayer of dedication to the Lord.

The lessons shared in the classrooms are for a variety of ministries, from Sunday school to Bible studies and midweek children’s programs. They offer Sunday school in Spanish and in Q'eqchi'.

Pastor Milián said that it was a blessing to see members of the local church and other congregations, even people who are not part of the church, share God's provisions such as materials, lunches, and snacks for volunteers.

“In 18 days, we saw a dream come true,” said Alex Milián Requena, pastor of the church. “Now we can be in a place with a comfortable and fresh environment…with new and safe walls, roof and electrical system, for everyone who wants to be disciple of Jesus."
