Naztoons by Dave Anderson

A new book, Naztoons, looks at the Church of the Nazarene through a collection of cartoons by artist Dave Anderson.

Anderson, a 40-year-employee of the Church of the Nazarene International Headquarters/Global Ministry Center, takes a "tongue-in-cheek" approach to life, which he illustrates in each expression of his work, providing a light-hearted take on the business of "doing church."

"Growing up Nazarene was, for the most part, a good way of life - although somewhat peculiar," Anderson said. "My family attended church Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night and many other church events in between. We lived and breathed church. As a child, I was permitted to draw in church-it kept me quiet. In college I found my art could entertain friends and it was a great way to meet girls."

Anderson continued drawing as a student at Nazarene Theological Seminary.

"In seminary, cartooning became my way of taking class notes, a process that carried itself on into my adult life," he said. "I'm what I call a reactionary cartoonist. I don't make up humorous situations. I simply react to the world around."

Anderson provides a candid and honest viewpoint on various denominational topics and issues in his collection of cartoons, which will be published September 30.

"Sometimes the cartoons are meant to entertain, sometimes to give voice to my thoughts, and sometimes to drive a message home - sometimes through sarcasm," he said. "The cartoons in this book are my memoires of some 40 years working inside the institution know by Nazarene's as the International Headquarters, or more recently as the Global Ministry Center. My hope is you will view these cartoons with humor and affection for the church we love."

Naztoons is $14.99 and can be preorder at www.naztoons.com.
