MVNU mourns loss of student

Melissa “Missy” Renee Johnson, 21, of Corry, Pennsylvania, died Saturday, December 19, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born April 5, 1994, in Clarion, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Thomas A. and Jill R. Sorenson Johnson.

Missy attended Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and was set to graduate in April  2016 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

MVNU President Henry W. Spaulding offered his condolences and informed the MVNU community of the loss over the weekend.

“It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we share this news with you," he said. "Our community grieves at this sudden loss and asks that you join in prayer for Missy’s family and friends.”

Missy was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Luella Johnson; and her maternal grandparents, Richard and Marlene Sorenson. In addition to her parents, Melissa is survived by her paternal grandfather, Arthur R. Johnson of Kane, Pa.; a sister, Heidi Stewart and her husband Steven of Belpre, Ohio; a brother, Benjamin Johnson of Middleport, Ohio; and a nephew, Caleb Johnson. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Viewing services were held at Bracken Funeral Home December 21 and 22 at First United Methodist Church in Corry. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Corry Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Nazarene University Nursing Scholarship, 800 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050, or Kenya Missions Team Corry First United Methodist Church, 650 Worth St., Corry, PA 16407.
