The COVID-19 pandemic made it more dangerous to carry on as usual, so the church altered its plans.</p> <p>“Instead of having the senior citizens come to them, they brought the luncheon to them,” said Pastor Augustus Andrews.</p> <p>The food baskets contained rice, sugar, flour, potatoes, onions, garlic, oil, and peas, among other items they may need. The items were all donated by members of the congregation.</p> <p>“We are a mission-driven church,” Andrews said. “Please continue to partner with us in prayer as we continue to do the will of God.”</p> <p>Traditionally, the luncheon is a celebration of the church’s elders. The youth would put on a concert and then give the elders a chance to share their own poems or special songs. Andrews said there are special prizes for people who have attended the longest and an award given for the oldest person in attendance.</p> <p>“The leadership team decided that because of their contributions to the community, and in some instances the lives of the members of the church, that we would celebrate them,” Andrews said. “It’s always a joy to see their smiling faces.”</p> <p>--<a href="mesoamericaregion.org" target="_blank">Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica Region</a></p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field-news-publish-date field__item"><time datetime="2021-01-15T12:00:00Z">15 Jan, 2021</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-comments field--type-facebook-comments field--label-hidden field-news-comments field__item"><div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, "script", "facebook-jssdk"));</script> <div class="fb-comments fb-comments-fluid" data-href="https://nazarene.org/rss.xml" data-num-posts="15" data-width="620" data-colorscheme="light"></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-editor-pick field--type-boolean field--label-above field-editor-pick"> <div class="field__label">Editor Pick</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field-news-media field__item"><article> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden field-media-image" data-blazy=""> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="padding-bottom: 53.33%" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--ratio media--ratio--fluid media--image"> <img height="400" width="750" class="b-lazy media__image media__element" data-src="/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/2021-01/guyana.jpg?itok=72aeKDLj" alt="Guyana" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field-news-tags"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=58&amp;tag%5B1%5D=58&amp;sort_by=created">Mesoamerica Region</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=385&amp;tag%5B1%5D=385&amp;sort_by=created">Guyana</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=195&amp;tag%5B1%5D=195&amp;sort_by=created">Coronavirus</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 15 Jan 2021 16:01:50 +0000 dlsperry94 5454 at https://nazarene.org South Carolina church raises money for Bibles in Cambodia https://nazarene.org/article/south-carolina-church-raises-money-bibles-cambodia <h2>South Carolina church raises money for Bibles in Cambodia</h2> <span><span lang="" about="/user/181" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">dlsperry94</span></span> <span>Fri, 01/15/2021 - 15:51</span> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field-news-author field__item">Nazarene News Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-popular field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field-news-popular field__item">No</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field-news-body field__item"><p>West Columbia Central Church of the Nazarene in South Carolina was inspired to raise money to purchase 440 Bibles for Cambodia after God used a missionary’s story to prompt the church to get involved.</p> <p>In late October, the church held a missions service where they watched a video about a missionary in Cambodia. The missionary tells <a href="https://www.nazarene.org/article/cambodia-churches-receive-new-bibles" target="_blank">a story about a security guard</a> who was happy to receive a Bible so he could return to his village and share about Jesus.</p> <p>Victoria Walker, who is the wife of Lead Pastor Brent Walker, felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit during the video to get involved. </p> <p>“On this night, the minute I heard that they only had 300 Bibles and how happy the security guard was to get one, I heard God say ‘That’s what I want you to do…raise the money to buy Bibles in Cambodia,’” Victoria said. </p> <p>Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions had dampened the turnout for the missions service, which disappointed the church’s missions president. That disappointment sparked Victoria to get the whole church involved.</p> <p>As she searched for ways to raise money, she found enough household items to hold a small yard sale. She then challenged the rest of the church to do the same, and they delivered.</p> <p>Members of West Columbia Central brought prized guitars, a 70-inch TV with speakers, fine china, furniture, and more, filling up an entire room with plenty of items. Those who didn’t have time to find items to donate pitched in through checks. In total, West Columbia Central raised $2,200 for Bibles in Cambodia, which amounts to 440 Bibles.</p> <p>Both Brent and Victoria characterized their church body as a very giving church.</p> <p>“Anytime we have asked for the church to step up to the plate, they have,” Victoria said. “From food drives and blessing boxes, they step up. I guess I was just kind of surprised because it was kind of my dream and not theirs. It was for something that wasn’t local.”</p> <p>The Walkers believe their church’s actions show a true family mentality. </p> <p>“It was our church family emphasizing the global church family,” Victoria said. “They did exactly what a family would do and just came right up beside me and just did all they could to help raise the money.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field-news-publish-date field__item"><time datetime="2021-01-15T12:00:00Z">15 Jan, 2021</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-comments field--type-facebook-comments field--label-hidden field-news-comments field__item"><div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, "script", "facebook-jssdk"));</script> <div class="fb-comments fb-comments-fluid" data-href="https://nazarene.org/rss.xml" data-num-posts="15" data-width="620" data-colorscheme="light"></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-editor-pick field--type-boolean field--label-above field-editor-pick"> <div class="field__label">Editor Pick</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field-news-media field__item"><article> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden field-media-image" data-blazy=""> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="padding-bottom: 53.33%" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--ratio media--ratio--fluid media--image"> <img height="400" width="750" class="b-lazy media__image media__element" data-src="/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/2021-01/Bibles.png?itok=5CDW05Te" alt="Bibles" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field-news-tags"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=63&amp;tag%5B1%5D=63&amp;sort_by=created">USA/Canada</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=73&amp;tag%5B1%5D=73&amp;sort_by=created">South Carolina</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=200&amp;tag%5B1%5D=200&amp;sort_by=created">Asia-Pacific</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=401&amp;tag%5B1%5D=401&amp;sort_by=created">Cambodia</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 15 Jan 2021 15:51:29 +0000 dlsperry94 5453 at https://nazarene.org West Virginia camp hosts COVID-19 vaccine clinic https://nazarene.org/article/west-virginia-camp-hosts-covid-19-vaccine-clinic <h2>West Virginia camp hosts COVID-19 vaccine clinic</h2> <span><span lang="" about="/user/181" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">dlsperry94</span></span> <span>Fri, 01/15/2021 - 15:19</span> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field-news-author field__item">Daniel Sperry for Nazarene News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-popular field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field-news-popular field__item">No</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field-news-body field__item"><p>Cars lined up outside of the West Virginia Nazarene Camp in Summersville, West Virginia, last week when the campground served as a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for the surrounding county. The county health department, with assistance from law enforcement and emergency services, vaccinated those over the age of 80 in its county. </p> <p>“We anticipated a fairly good crowd today, which we have validated,” Charley Bickford, Nicholas County emergency manager, <a href="https://woay.com/nicholas-county-health-department-distributes-moderna-vaccine-to-seniors/" target="_blank">told WOAY News</a>. “When we showed up at 8 a.m. today, everyone was ready to rock and roll.”</p> <p>They distributed somewhere between 150-200 doses of the vaccine, which was administered to people in their cars as well as in a traditional sit-down clinic. </p> <p>West Virginia Nazarene Camp is owned by both the North and South districts. According to Kevin Dennis, superintendent of the West Virginia North District, the Nicholas County Health Department approached them years ago to serve as a critical crisis center for the state. The campground has held typical flu vaccinations in the past. When the county called to ask if the camp would help the community get the COVID-19 vaccine, they were more than happy to agree.</p> <p>“Our districts are both very pleased that we’re able to use the facility to reach out to the community with this very important vaccine,” Dennis said. “We’re excited about the number of people that have been cared for through the facility.”</p> <p>While West Virginia hasn’t been one of the hardest-hit states by the COVID-19 pandemic, it does have a larger high-risk population, and Nicholas County specifically has one of the higher rates of infection in the state. While camp and district leaders are currently in conversations with the county health department to hold more COVID-19 vaccination clinics on-site, they are also excited about serving the community through a new compassionate ministry to be housed on the campgrounds. </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><p></p></p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field-news-publish-date field__item"><time datetime="2021-01-15T12:00:00Z">15 Jan, 2021</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-comments field--type-facebook-comments field--label-hidden field-news-comments field__item"><div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, "script", "facebook-jssdk"));</script> <div class="fb-comments fb-comments-fluid" data-href="https://nazarene.org/rss.xml" data-num-posts="15" data-width="620" data-colorscheme="light"></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-editor-pick field--type-boolean field--label-above field-editor-pick"> <div class="field__label">Editor Pick</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field-news-media field__item"><article> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden field-media-image" data-blazy=""> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="padding-bottom: 53.33%" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--ratio media--ratio--fluid media--image"> <img height="400" width="750" class="b-lazy media__image media__element" data-src="/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/2021-01/West%20Virginia%20Naz%20Camp%20.png?itok=L4YWnuSf" alt="West Virginia Naz Camp" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div class="visually-hidden">Caption</div> <div class="field-media-image-caption"><p>Cars line up outside of the West Virginia Nazarene Camp to receive the COVID-19 vaccine</p> </div> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field-news-tags"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=63&amp;tag%5B1%5D=63&amp;sort_by=created">USA/Canada</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=374&amp;tag%5B1%5D=374&amp;sort_by=created">West Virginia</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=195&amp;tag%5B1%5D=195&amp;sort_by=created">Coronavirus</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 15 Jan 2021 15:19:17 +0000 dlsperry94 5452 at https://nazarene.org Olivet Board of Trustees elects new university president https://nazarene.org/article/olivet-board-trustees-elects-new-university-president <h2>Olivet Board of Trustees elects new university president</h2> <span><span lang="" about="/user/181" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">dlsperry94</span></span> <span>Fri, 01/15/2021 - 14:50</span> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field-news-author field__item">Olivet Nazarene University</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-popular field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field-news-popular field__item">No</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field-news-body field__item"><p>The Olivet Nazarene University Board of Trustees elected Gregg Chenoweth as the 13th president of ONU. Chenoweth, currently president of Bethel University (Indiana), will assume his duties as university president on 1 June 2021. He will succeed John C. Bowling, who in August 2019 announced his plans to retire. </p> <p>“I am struck by the utter completeness of Dr. Chenoweth’s qualifications theologically, professionally, academically, and personally,” said Scott Sherwood, board chairman.</p> <p>Over the past 15 months, the Board of Trustees was assisted by search consultant and president of MK Stevenson Consulting, Mark Stevenson. The Executive Committee of the Board served as the search and nominating committee. They solicited input from the entire Olivet community, and hundreds of people participated in a survey process that included the Board of Trustees, the ONU Alumni Board, the Foundation Board, Nazarene denominational and church leaders, and ONU leadership, faculty, staff, and students.</p> <p>This process identified a diverse group of highly qualified candidates from around the world. After a broad and thorough vetting process, the search committee came to the unanimous conclusion to recommend Chenoweth to the full Board for a vote as the next university president.</p> <p>“This has been a prayerful discernment process from beginning to end,” Sherwood said. “We asked God for clarity and unity, and He has answered our prayer.”</p> <p>Chenoweth has been the president of Bethel University since 2013. He previously served as the vice president for academic affairs at Olivet. During his tenure as university president at Bethel, he dramatically improved the university’s financial landscape by increasing net assets by 30 percent and reducing long-term debt by 40 percent. Chenoweth also significantly improved institutional culture, implemented successful debt-free programs for students, and completed an extensive strategic planning process.</p> <p>“I am honored by the confidence of the Board,” Chenoweth said after the election, “and eager to add my ambitions to a faculty and staff already doing something special. If I could help reproduce for students even a fraction of what Olivet did for me, there will be a lot to celebrate."</p> <p>Chenoweth graduated from Olivet in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in communication. He then earned a master’s degree in organizational communication from Northern Illinois University in 1992 and a doctorate in organizational communication from Wayne State University in 2003. Chenoweth has published works in nearly 30 media outlets and edited a book, <i>Telos: The Destination for Nazarene Higher Education</i>. He is married to Tammy, a 1989 graduate of Olivet. They have three adult children and identical twin granddaughters.</p> <p>“I was delighted when I learned that the Board of Trustees had elected Gregg Chenoweth to be the next president of Olivet,” Bowling said. “He is a gifted, experienced, and dedicated leader who has years of administrative experience. But like many other businesses and organizations, there was not one for a global pandemic.</p> <p>“It’s very unique because usually there are spots around the world that we avoid, but this was something you couldn’t avoid,” said Marty Hoskins, personnel director for Global Missions. “Our response was pretty quick in developing protocols because of the experience that we have in dealing with crises.”</p> <p>Because Global Missions already communicates regularly with employees around the world, remote work is routine to some extent. But the team significantly increased its regular communication through already available technology such as Zoom and WhatsApp.</p> <p>“We created WhatsApp groups for each of the regions, just so that we could communicate quickly with people who are trying to make decisions, people who are stuck and trying to get back to their places, or [those who are] needing to make decisions on travel,” Hoskins said.</p> <p>The GM personnel team gathered information including each missionary’s age and health status, what the local health care available to them looked like, their country’s political stability, and other factors pertinent to their health and safety. The team evaluated decisions for each missionary on a case-by-case basis rather than approaching the pandemic with a one-size-fits-all strategy. </p> <p>“In some places, missionaries had the freedom to get out and go to the store,” Hoskins said. “But we had some missionaries who literally could not leave their homes for five weeks. It was very challenging to the point where food was a challenge. We were experiencing it very differently, even though we were all impacted by it.”</p> <p>A few families were repatriated to their home countries, but most decided to stay where they were. </p> <p>About 50 missionaries were stranded outside of their assignment location when international borders closed suddenly and flights were cancelled. The personnel team worked with these missionaries as they searched for temporary housing, rescheduled speaking engagements at churches, and then settled in to wait out the pandemic lockdowns.</p> <p>Almost two dozen missionaries are known to have contracted COVID-19. Thankfully, only one was hospitalized, and all have since recovered. </p> <p>Hoskins said he has seen God at work in multiple situations. A Work &amp; Witness team that was stuck in Peru found repatriation flights and was able to return to the United States. Several missionaries were relocated safely from unstable local situations. One missionary was relocated for health reasons but was able to return to assignment in spite of closed borders and suspended flights. Stranded missionaries found housing and have been cared for while waiting for flights back to their assignments.</p> <p>Dozens of missionaries are normally on home assignment at any given time throughout the year, raising funds for their ministries and some of their basic living expenses for the next year or two. With churches suspending in-person gatherings and missionaries locked down and postponing their speaking engagements, raising funds has been a challenge for some. </p> <p>“We’ve been very pleased that churches have been willing to do online, virtual interviews or sermons. Our missionaries have been sending videos,” he said. “We all took immediate measures here at the GMC, as well as around the world, with discretionary spending. By not traveling, that helps. </p> <p>“We’re grateful for the continued prayers and sacrificial giving of Nazarenes from around the world.  We’re also praying that God will continue to provide those needed resources in order to maintain our missionary efforts as a church.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field-news-publish-date field__item"><time datetime="2021-01-13T12:00:00Z">13 Jan, 2021</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-comments field--type-facebook-comments field--label-hidden field-news-comments field__item"><div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, "script", "facebook-jssdk"));</script> <div class="fb-comments fb-comments-fluid" data-href="https://nazarene.org/rss.xml" data-num-posts="15" data-width="620" data-colorscheme="light"></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-editor-pick field--type-boolean field--label-above field-editor-pick"> <div class="field__label">Editor Pick</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field-news-media field__item"><article> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden field-media-image" data-blazy=""> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="padding-bottom: 53.33%" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--ratio media--ratio--fluid media--image"> <img height="400" width="750" class="b-lazy media__image media__element" data-src="/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/2021-01/missions.png?itok=kbmQ-hOq" alt="missions" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field-news-tags"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=150&amp;tag%5B1%5D=150&amp;sort_by=created">Missions</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=195&amp;tag%5B1%5D=195&amp;sort_by=created">Coronavirus</a></div> </div> </div> Wed, 13 Jan 2021 20:35:20 +0000 dlsperry94 5449 at https://nazarene.org In Memoriam https://nazarene.org/article/memoriam-15-january-2021 <h2>In Memoriam</h2> <span><span lang="" about="/user/181" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">dlsperry94</span></span> <span>Tue, 01/12/2021 - 16:22</span> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field-news-author field__item">Nazarene News Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-popular field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field-news-popular field__item">No</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field-news-body field__item"><p>The following is a weekly listing of Nazarene ministers and leaders who recently went home to be with the Lord. Jesus came fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah:</p> <p>For to us a child is born,<br /> to us a son is given,<br /> and the government will be on his shoulders.<br /> And he will be called<br /> Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,<br /> Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.<br /> (Isaiah 9:6-7)</p> <p>What happens in one part of the world is not isolated but impacts us all. This is certainly true as we reflect upon the pandemic and the ways in which it has touched the whole world. This can also be said of political unrest, which creates uncertainty and destabilization around the globe. It is in these precarious times that God’s people turn toward the sure and certain hope that is found in Jesus Christ. </p> <p>As followers of Jesus, we seek ways to be loving,<b> </b>forgiving, and charitable. In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He reminds us: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). He continues by telling us that we are called to be salt and light in our world: “… let your light shine before people, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).</p> <p>Like the Lord we follow, we are called to be peacemakers and to have a positive impact as salt and light in our world. This cannot be done apart from God’s grace experienced through the power of the Holy Spirit. </p> <p>Therefore, the Board of General Superintendents is calling the global Church of the Nazarene to a week of prayer and fasting beginning on Monday, 11 January. When the church joins in prayer and acts in unanimity with Jesus’ vision, we are assured that God will do what we cannot. </p> <p>Please, join us each day next week as we focus on the need for spiritual renewal within the Church and for healing the great divides in our world.</p> <p>Monday — Pray for spiritual renewal and revival to come to the Church. </p> <p>Tuesday — Pray for peace and opportunities to show Christ’s love to others.</p> <p>Wednesday — Pray for the persecuted church around the world and for our missionaries.</p> <p>Thursday — Pray for those who are suffering as a result of the global pandemic.</p> <p>Friday — Pray for unity among God’s people and for healing across the nations.</p> <p>Saturday — Pray for those who have yet to come to faith in Jesus Christ.</p> <p>Sunday — Pray for the Holy Spirit to fill us again so that we may be empowered to be Christlike in this world.</p> <p>For more information, <a href="https://resources.nazarene.org/index.php/s/qasjNTkE4azJH9e#pdfviewer" target="_blank">click here</a>.</p> <p>--<a href="https://nazarene.org/who-we-are/organization/leadership/board-general-superintendents" target="_blank">Board of General Superintendents</a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family:Calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:&#10;minor-latin;color:black"><p></p></span></p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field-news-publish-date field__item"><time datetime="2021-01-08T12:00:00Z">08 Jan, 2021</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-comments field--type-facebook-comments field--label-hidden field-news-comments field__item"><div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, "script", "facebook-jssdk"));</script> <div class="fb-comments fb-comments-fluid" data-href="https://nazarene.org/rss.xml" data-num-posts="15" data-width="620" data-colorscheme="light"></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-editor-pick field--type-boolean field--label-above field-editor-pick"> <div class="field__label">Editor Pick</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field-news-media field__item"><article> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden field-media-image" data-blazy=""> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="padding-bottom: 53.4%" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--ratio media--ratio--fluid media--image"> <img height="510" width="955" class="b-lazy media__image media__element" data-src="/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/2021-01/MaskedWomanPraying.jpeg?itok=uLV7JpNd" alt="Masked woman praying" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field-news-tags"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=217&amp;tag%5B1%5D=217&amp;sort_by=created">BGS</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 08 Jan 2021 19:46:55 +0000 Sarah Wise 5446 at https://nazarene.org Ohio church doubles yearly food distribution amid pandemic https://nazarene.org/article/ohio-church-doubles-yearly-food-distribution-amid-pandemic <h2>Ohio church doubles yearly food distribution amid pandemic</h2> <span><span lang="" about="/user/181" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">dlsperry94</span></span> <span>Fri, 01/08/2021 - 19:30</span> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field-news-author field__item">Daniel Sperry for Nazarene News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-popular field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field-news-popular field__item">No</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field-news-body field__item"><p>When a farmer in Oregon needed a place to distribute more than 400,000 pounds of food, someone tagged Chad Garinger, lead Pastor of Sciotoville Church of the Nazarene, in the Facebook post. That generosity allowed the church’s food bank to distribute double its annual amount.</p> <p>The Potter’s House is a compassionate ministry of Sciotoville Church of the Nazarene, a small church with an attendance of less than 50. More than 80 percent of the surrounding county’s 78,000 residents live at or below the poverty line, and nearly half of the residents visit the church’s food pantry. </p> <p>Garinger received even more than the 400,000 pounds of food the farmer had initially mentioned. Potter’s House worked to distribute the food at multiple points across the county as well.</p> <p>“Last year we distributed 434 tons of food to our community,” Garinger said. “When you add the farmers’ program, we have distributed over 800 tons of food to our county.”</p> <p>Garinger commended the action of their small church.</p> <p>“Not everybody in the church participates in everything, but everybody in the church participates in something,” Garinger said. “[It could be] an elderly lady sitting at home who says she can’t come help in the distribution but can certainly pray for us. That’s huge.”</p> <p>Under the direction of Erika Stepp, Potter’s House offers more than just a food bank. They help community members sign up for health benefits, heat assistance, SNAP benefits, and many more social service programs. The staff, who are all IRS certified tax volunteers, also help prepare nearly 2,500 individuals' state and federal tax returns during tax season. </p> <p>“People know that if they have a need, even if we can’t meet that need, we will find someone who can,” Garinger said. “We know who to ask.”</p> <p>The Portsmouth/Sciotoville area is a post-industrial city along the Ohio River, closer to Kentucky than the next city in Ohio. All but one of the factories in the area have closed up over time, and the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have hit the already-struggling community hard. </p> <p>The community supports the Potter’s House in many ways. Local churches send volunteers or financial assistance, and sometimes both. One day, Garinger found the alley behind the building paved after mentioning to the mayor that the gravel made it difficult to offload food with hand-trucks and sometimes ruined fresh produce as it spilled. A bar in a local city donates one third of its tips every quarter to the food bank. Some of the bartenders have even volunteered at Potter’s House.</p> <p>“I’m guessing some of those clients and patrons of that institution probably come here and participate as well,” Garinger said.</p> <p>Just as the community is aware of Potter’s House's impact, the church knows that the community needs the hope it provides.</p> <p>“The whole tagline for Potter’s House is ‘Reshaping lives in Jesus’ name,’” Garinger said. “If you walk the neighborhoods, if you see the people in the community, you … know for sure that these people have felt real needs. What I love about this church is that we are willing to do everything it takes to meet the needs.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field-news-publish-date field__item"><time datetime="2021-01-08T12:00:00Z">08 Jan, 2021</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-comments field--type-facebook-comments field--label-hidden field-news-comments field__item"><div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, "script", "facebook-jssdk"));</script> <div class="fb-comments fb-comments-fluid" data-href="https://nazarene.org/rss.xml" data-num-posts="15" data-width="620" data-colorscheme="light"></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-editor-pick field--type-boolean field--label-above field-editor-pick"> <div class="field__label">Editor Pick</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field-news-media field__item"><article> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden field-media-image" data-blazy=""> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="padding-bottom: 53.33%" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--ratio media--ratio--fluid media--image"> <img height="400" width="750" class="b-lazy media__image media__element" data-src="/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/2021-01/Sciotoville%20Naz.png?itok=QOd78OYY" alt="Sciotoville Naz" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field-news-tags"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=63&amp;tag%5B1%5D=63&amp;sort_by=created">USA/Canada</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=101&amp;tag%5B1%5D=101&amp;sort_by=created">Ohio</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=195&amp;tag%5B1%5D=195&amp;sort_by=created">Coronavirus</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 08 Jan 2021 19:30:28 +0000 dlsperry94 5445 at https://nazarene.org In memory of Robert, Carolyn Scott https://nazarene.org/article/memory-robert-carolyn-scott <h2>In memory of Robert, Carolyn Scott</h2> <span><span lang="" about="/user/181" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">dlsperry94</span></span> <span>Fri, 01/08/2021 - 18:02</span> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field-news-author field__item">Nazarene News Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-popular field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field-news-popular field__item">No</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field-news-body field__item"><p>Robert and Carolyn Scott, 90, passed away 27 and 24 December 2020, respectively. Robert was a pastor and district superintendent in addition to serving as the director of World Missions from 1986 to 1994. </p> <p>Carolyn was born to Opal and Levert Weaver in Glendale, California, on 16 March 1930. Robert was born to Fannie and Price Scott in Floydada, Texas, on 2 April 1930. The couple attended Fullerton Union High School together and went on to attend Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University), where Robert graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1950. </p> <p>They quickly began their first pastoral assignment in West Sacramento, California, followed by pastorates in Wasco, Fresno, and Santa Ana, California. In 1975, Robert was appointed superintendent for the Southern California District. In 1986, he was elected director of World Missions for the Church of the Nazarene, serving in that capacity for eight years. </p> <p>During his time as director, the Church of the Nazarene entered 26 new world areas and helped usher in new financial policies. </p> <p>“Their ministry as pastor, district superintendent, and World Missions director enriched thousands of lives,” said General Superintendent Emeritus Nina Gunter. “During Bob's time as World Missions director, I witnessed his vision and creativity to initiate the Church of the Nazarene entering 26 world areas. Carolyn was compassionately engaged in their Kingdom ministry.”</p> <p>Current Global Missions Director Verne Ward was a missionary to Papa New Guinea when he first met the Scotts. </p> <p>“When you were around them, you felt that they believed in God’s ability to work through the challenges and difficulties that often arose,” Ward said. “You felt that they believed in God’s ability in you, and they genuinely cared for the welfare and well-being of their missionaries.”</p> <p>His compassion for his missionaries resonated with many more, including Louis Bustle, who followed Robert as World Missions director. </p> <p>“Dr. Scott and Carolyn loved the missionaries and had a heart for the mission,” he said. “I learned many things from his leadership. He left a great legacy to the Church of the Nazarene.”</p> <p>Following Robert’s time as director, he published two books, <i>All Over the World…Our Family </i>and <i>The Future: It’s Here! Now What? </i></p> <p>According to their family, Carolyn and Robert created a home life of love and honor that they shared with others through their hospitality. In a 2011 <a href="https://www.mtdemocrat.com/prospecting/the-scotts-share-a-lifetime-of-love/">article published</a> in the <i>Mountain Democrat </i>just after the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary,<i> </i>Robert explained that they put Christ at the center of their relationship. </p> <p>“We were determined to live our marriage in mutual respect and admiration,” Robert said. “We took Jesus’ promise as our guideline. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said: ‘Your Heavenly Father will give you what you need from day to day if you live for Him, and make the Kingdom of God your first concern' (Matthew 6:33).”</p> <p>Carolyn was preceded in death by her sister Barbara Gentz Thompson and brother Harold Weaver. Robert was preceded in death by his sisters Melba Anderson, Margie Morse, Merna Ellerd and brother Price Jr. </p> <p>Carolyn and Robert are survived by their daughter, Vicki Reese (Stephen); son, Steve Scott (Debbie); four grandchildren, Heather Cortez (Tomas), Holly Reese, Robert Scott, and David Scott; and two great-grandchildren, Victoria and Katarina. </p> <p>A private family graveside service will be held with a public memorial service pending.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field-news-publish-date field__item"><time datetime="2021-01-08T12:00:00Z">08 Jan, 2021</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-comments field--type-facebook-comments field--label-hidden field-news-comments field__item"><div id="fb-root"></div> <script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, "script", "facebook-jssdk"));</script> <div class="fb-comments fb-comments-fluid" data-href="https://nazarene.org/rss.xml" data-num-posts="15" data-width="620" data-colorscheme="light"></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-editor-pick field--type-boolean field--label-above field-editor-pick"> <div class="field__label">Editor Pick</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field-news-media field__item"><article> <div class="blazy field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden field-media-image" data-blazy=""> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="padding-bottom: 53.36%" class="media media--blazy media--loading media--ratio media--ratio--fluid media--image"> <img height="834" width="1563" class="b-lazy media__image media__element" data-src="/sites/default/files/styles/original_image/public/2021-01/Robert%20and%20Carolyn%20Scott.jpg?itok=7wQ8Ce7J" alt="Robert and Carolyn" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" typeof="foaf:Image" /> </div> </div> </div> </article> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above field-news-tags"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=63&amp;tag%5B1%5D=63&amp;sort_by=created">USA/Canada</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=68&amp;tag%5B1%5D=68&amp;sort_by=created">Passings</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/all-news?keywords=&amp;tag%5B0%5D=150&amp;tag%5B1%5D=150&amp;sort_by=created">Missions</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 08 Jan 2021 18:02:27 +0000 dlsperry94 5444 at https://nazarene.org
