Nazar\u00e9ens ont commenc\u00e9 leur p\u00e8lerinage d\u00e9nominationnel avec un sens de l’histoire. Ceux qui ont des racines m\u00e9thodistes ont vu l’\u00c9glise du Nazar\u00e9en comme le m\u00e9thodisme restaur\u00e9, consacrant un accent historique que l’\u00c9glise plus ancienne avait abandonn\u00e9. Sous un angle de vision diff\u00e9rent, ceux qui ont des racines non m\u00e9thodistes ont vu l’importance de la nouvelle d\u00e9nomination dans sa solution unitive au probl\u00e8me pos\u00e9 par la pl\u00e9thore de sectes engendr\u00e9es par le R\u00e9veil de Saintet\u00e9 – un point de vue qui a infus\u00e9 l’allocution d’Edgar P. Ellyson, un ancien Quaker, \u00e0 la Deuxi\u00e8me Assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale en 1908. Et tous les fondateurs – m\u00e9thodistes et non m\u00e9thodistes – ont pleinement appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 que la nouvelle \u00c9glise, \u00e0 ses propres termes, a surmont\u00e9 les schismes r\u00e9gionaux qui avaient domin\u00e9 la religion am\u00e9ricaine depuis le d\u00e9bat sur l’esclavage dans les ann\u00e9es 1840. Le proc\u00e8s-verbal de la Deuxi\u00e8me Assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale refl\u00e8te le sentiment envo\u00fbtant d’accomplissement que les participants ont ressenti \u00e0 propos de r\u00e9concilier les ailes Nord et Sud du Mouvement de Saintet\u00e9 dans un nouvel ordre d\u00e9nominationnel.<\/p>

Trois ans plus tard, la troisi\u00e8me Assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale a choisi Edward F. Walker pour \u00eatre \u00ab Historien g\u00e9n\u00e9ral \u00bb de l’\u00c9glise. Des historiens r\u00e9gionaux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sign\u00e9s pour l’aider : H. B. Hosley et Fred Hillery dans le Nord-Est ; C. B. Jernigan dans le Sud ; et Leslie F. Gay sur la c\u00f4te ouest.
