Los nazarenos iniciaron su peregrinaje denominacional con un sentido de la historia. Aquellos con ra\u00edces metodistas ve\u00edan a la Iglesia del Nazareno como un renacimiento del metodismo, que consagraba un \u00e9nfasis hist\u00f3rico que la iglesia m\u00e1s antigua hab\u00eda abandonado. Desde un \u00e1ngulo de visi\u00f3n diferente, aquellos con ra\u00edces no metodistas vieron la importancia de la nueva denominaci\u00f3n en su soluci\u00f3n unificadora al problema planteado por la gran cantidad de sectas surgidas del Renacimiento de la Santidad \u2014un punto de vista que impregn\u00f3 el discurso de Edgar P. Ellyson, un antiguo cu\u00e1quero, ante la Segunda Asamblea General en 1908. Y todos los fundadores \u2014tanto metodistas como no metodistas\u2014 eran plenamente conscientes de que la nueva iglesia, en sus propios t\u00e9rminos, hab\u00eda superado las divisiones regionales que hab\u00edan dominado la religi\u00f3n estadounidense desde el debate sobre la esclavitud en la d\u00e9cada de 1840. Las actas de la Segunda Asamblea General reflejan la embriagadora sensaci\u00f3n de logro que sintieron los participantes al haber logrado reconciliar las ramas del norte y del sur del Movimiento de Santidad en un nuevo orden denominacional. <\/p>

Tres a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, la Tercera Asamblea General eligi\u00f3 a Edward F. Walker como \u00abHistoriador General\u00bb de la iglesia. Se design\u00f3 a historiadores regionales para que le ayudaran: H. B. Hosley y Fred Hillery en el noreste; C. B. Jernigan en el sur; y Leslie F. Gay en la costa oeste.
