Se gradu\u00f3 de Glendale High School, recibi\u00f3 su Licenciatura en Artes de la Universidad Nazarena del Noroeste y su Maestr\u00eda en Artes en el Ministerio de la Universidad Nazarena de Point Loma. Sirvi\u00f3 en el Cuerpo Marino de los Estados Unidos de 1956 a 1959 como sargento explorador observador avanzado.
