Jimmy De Gouveia, South America Regional Youth Coordinator

What motivates you to work with youth?

The potential that young people have is great. They are the ones who have the time and ability to take our church to the next level. I am passionate about empowering them and resourcing them with resources to maximize their gifts and their ministry.

How many years have you been in youth ministry?

I have been involved in youth ministry since I started going to church. Sixteen years ago I started as youth president of my local church.

What is the best book you have read relating to youth ministry?

Effective Youth Ministry, by Dr. Lucas Leys.

What’s the best advice you can give a youth leader?

Let God, not your emotions, be at the center of both your ministry and your ideas. Let God guide the direction of the ministry; that is achieved by spending time with Him.

What’s the best advice you can give to parents of youth?

We can’t give our children a negative label. God doesn’t give black sheep to a family. He gives us beautiful and creative children. Love your children. Dedicate time to pray for them, and then pray for them a lot.

What would you like the church to know about today’s youth?

Young people have what it takes to develop today’s church. Trust them, and give them opportunities for ministry.
