The visit of General Superintendent J. K. Warrick to Cuba was characterized by celebration and praise to God for what Nazarenes there are doing to make Christlike disciples in the nations. Joined by Global Mission Director Louie Bustle and Regional Director John Smee, Dr. Warrick and his wife, Patty, observed inspiration and sacrifice among the Cuban Nazarenes.

An opening district rally at the Cubano Seminario Teológico Nazareno filled the sanctuary to standing room only with nearly 500 in attendance, many of whom were outside looking in at every window. The music was lively and joyful, and a gracious altar response followed Dr. Warrick’s message.

The district assembly began with a devotional message from Dr. Bustle and included the report of District Superintendent Leonel Lopez. The district has experienced growth over the past year among Cuba’s churches, including an increase of 399 in Sunday School attendance and 229 in membership. Dr. Warrick called their growth over the decade “incredible” from 35 churches to today’s 71 churches, more than 100 percent increase. Decadal statistics also include +1,225 in Sunday School attendance, +1,429 in worship attendance, and +2.705 in membership.

During the district assembly, with over 400 people in attendance, Dr. Warrick ordained five new elders. With the plight of Haiti on these dedicated Nazarenes’ hearts, they received a special offering for their Haitian brothers and sisters. The district superintendent had challenged pastors to join with him in giving a week’s salary if possible. On their limited income, they gave an amazing $1,835 (US).

Dr. Warrick is jurisdictional general superintendent for the Caribbean Region. Of the Cuban Nazarenes’ sacrifice and dedication, he said, “I was moved beyond measure.”
