W. Talmadge Johnson is a general superintendent emeritus in the Church of the Nazarene. He was elected at the 25th General Assembly in Indianapolis, Indiana, in June 2001.  At the time of his election, he was serving as director of Sunday School Ministries, a position he had held since July 1, 1994. He retired and was awarded the title of general superintendent emeritus at the 26th General Assembly in Indianapolis, Indiana, in June 2005.

A graduate of Southern Nazarene University, Dr. Johnson received the bachelor of arts and the master of arts degrees in religion.  Ordained in 1958 on the Southwest Oklahoma District, he served as an evangelist from 1958 to 1961.  He pastored Elk City, Oklahoma, from 1961 to 1965.  From 1965 to 1975 he was the founding pastor of Oklahoma City Western Oaks Church of the Nazarene. 

Dr. Johnson served as superintendent of the Mississippi District from 1975 to 1980 and the Tennessee District from 1980 to 1994.  Following retirement from the Board of General Superintendents, he served as interim superintendent of the Southwest Oklahoma District from July 2007 to December 2009.

Dr. Johnson was a member of the General Board (1972-1976 and 1980-1994).  During those years, he served as General President of Nazarene Youth International (1972-1976) and chairman of the World Mission Department (1986-1994).  Trevecca Nazarene University honored him with the doctor of divinity degree in 1983.  Additionally, his alma mater, Southern Nazarene University, conferred upon him the honorary doctor of divinity degree in 2000.  With Dr. Stan Toler he co-authored Rediscovering the Sunday School.

He and his wife, Genell, make their home in Nashville, Tennessee. They have two sons, Michael and Jeffrey, who with their families serve in special ministries in the Church of the Nazarene.
