SDMI Emphasis, Spring 2013

The mission of the Church of the Nazarene is "to make Christlike disciples in the nations." The eight semi-annual Sunday School emphases of this quadrennium focus on encouraging local Sunday School classes and small groups to connect with this mission. A list of Strategic Discipleship Methods & Ideas (SDMI) applicable to all the emphases is provided. Help us build this list by Emailing your ideas to sdmi@nazarene.org. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sunday School Emphasis: Baptizing

Theme: Immersing believers with a biblical understanding of discipleship

April 7 - May 12, 2013

Water baptism is a way for us to publicly identify with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. It is a way of professing publicly that we have a new identity and life in Christ. We are people called to make disciples; therefore, let us be intentional about “baptizing” people with the understanding of what it means to follow Christ. Let’s immerse believers with a proper, biblical understanding of discipleship, which is more than simply trying to get people to be nice and do good things.

Society loves to exalt people who give themselves to good causes. We honor those who give their money to help the needy, find cures to diseases, and make this world a better place. While these are noble things, following Christ demands more than just being a good, moral person. Being a disciple of Christ involves an encounter with Him that is transformational. It ultimately means we are baptized by the Holy Spirit to live holy lives as we surrender to God. When this happens we will naturally create space for God to use us to help others follow Jesus more closely.
