April

For many people, the word “April” triggers “April showers bring May flowers.” For those living where there are distinct seasonal changes, they’re watching tree buds, the grass turn green, and flowers budding. For some, it means the start of tornado season—a season that can wreak havoc and create fear.

As you think about ministry opportunities for April, consider the possibility of having someone present information about gardening, landscaping, and lawn care. This can be useful tips for the beginning, new information about ways to protect the environment, how to have a box garden, or other topics applicable to your community.

If you live in an area that has potential for tornadoes, have someone present information about how to prepare for the season, steps to protect people, and how to respond after a tornado hits. While the information is readily available, it often helps to review it. There are some who know the information but have not developed an action plan.

This can also be a good time to consider an action plan for the church facilities. Sometimes the structure of church facilities doesn’t provide good shelter for tornados and other natural disasters. This is also an ideal opportunity for Women’s Ministries to develop some strategies for ministry in the event of natural disaster. Admittedly, we don’t like to think about these possibilities, but for many it is a reality that must be addressed.

Depending on the size of the congregation, this may be a good time to consider spring cleaning for the church, too. Perhaps there is someone who can share cleaning tips that can help to turn a dread chore into a more enjoyable task.

Easter also falls in April. Consider the possibility of having people in the congregation write short articles on favorite Easter traditions and memories.  Another option is to ask them to write devotionals in preparation for Holy Week and Easter Sunday. This could be printed or posted on the church’s web site.
