Single Adult Ministries covers a wide age span and various
lifestyles. While adult is the operative word in Single Adult Ministries, it is
important to recognize that the individuals also reflect many stages of adult
development. What is ministry to young adults may not meet the needs of
middle-age or older single adults.
Single adults may be divorced, never-married, or widowed.
Many will be single parents-some due to death or divorce. Others chose to become
a parent by adoption. There will be common parenting issues, yet the method by
which the individuals became single parents often requires ministry designed for
specific groups.
Never-married adults tend to be overlooked in designing
Single Adult Ministries. Since these individuals do not have a death certificate
or divorce decree, it becomes easy to overlook ministry designed for them.
Never-married adults face many challenges as they determine what it means to
live life as a Christian never-married adult in a society that places great
value of family.
Single adults comprise over 40 percent of the population over
18-years of age. Never-married adults account for 25 percent of this population
segment. It has been estimated that over 53 percent of the unchurched population
are single adults.
