Renewed Life

"Joy in Christ Jesus!" Not long ago, that statement meant nothing to me. Although I had been raised to go to church every week and to say my prayers, I had missed the connection of how I could personally know God. Without this it was easy to push God as far away from me as possible, especially as I progressed through school and into college. By the time I finished college, I treated God as if He were someone who existed only when I needed something.

Then I was invited to a Bible study sponsored by a local Nazarene church. Although I was hesitant, through this study I was taught about God's Word and the promises that God has made. I met loving people who accepted me with open arms into their church community. I met people who smiled and held out their welcoming hands, looking at me with love in their eyes and hearts rather than the judgment or the contempt I expected.

At church each Sunday, I was introduced to more stories, more teachings, and more loving people, people with stories like mine. In time I came to know Jesus personally. I came to understand that God loves us and has a will for each of us. I learned that God loves me and wants nothing more than the best for me not just today, not just tomorrow, but for eternity.

With the help of faithful people, a church with a welcoming heart, and the persistence of God, my life was renewed through Jesus Christ. He led me out of a life filled with wrong turns and bad decisions and into a life where love endures. I have a path before me, and He has lit the way.

Today as I strive to let God use me as He knows best, the blessings grow beyond my expectations. With Jesus on the throne of my heart and a community that surrounds me and loves me, I finally know the joy that people are referring to when they say, "Joy in Christ Jesus!"
