Bitterness to Joy

I have played the guitar since I was ten years old and always wanted to be a professional musician. My family went to church most Sundays when I was young, but God never seemed real to me. As soon as I was old enough, I began playing in local clubs and stopped going to church because of the late hours I was keeping. I married my high school sweetheart, made my living as a musician, and thought life was good. However, the marriage ended in divorce. My wife married the man who had served as best man at our wedding. Life wasn't so good anymore. I continued playing in bars, clubs, and hotel lounges for another ten years. I was unfulfilled and unhappy that life hadn't turned out better for me.

In 1997 I quit playing in clubs and began working with a group that presented positive message music programs in schools. I began to realize that I was not living the virtues that were being communicated in these programs.

I attended a personal growth seminar where it was suggested that if I wanted my life to be better I should make a spiritual connection. I dismissed the idea at first, but a seed had been planted.

I began reading the Bible. Soon some friends suggested that I visit their church. When I began attending the Nazarene church, I was impressed by the friendliness of the people there. They were very inclusive and welcomed me warmly. One of the pastors there made it a point to remember my name. I began to receive invitations to play the guitar with the worship team and other musical groups in the church.

One night during a meeting with a pastor and some other members of that church, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. My life has been totally changed. Where I had been full of bitterness, instead I found joy.

God has provided me many opportunities in music ministry and a new wife who is more than I ever dreamed. I am thankful to God for the way He has used the Church of the Nazarene to reach me. He is a God of second chances, and I give Him all the glory.
