The Ackermans are excited to return to mission work as Global Missionaries in the fall of 2016. David is the Field Education Coordinator for the Philippines/Micronesia Field. Rhonda will work to help integrate a combined pastoral care and health care in local churches.
The Ackerman's were Global Missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene from 1999 to 2008. They spent over seven years at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary in the Philippines, where David was Professor of New Testament and Rhonda was part time campus nurse and involved in various ministries. They also served at Nazarene Theological College in Australia, where David was Lecturer in Bible and Rhonda assisted in campus ministries.
Upon returning to the United States, David became pastor of the Sheridan, Wyoming, Church of the Nazarene. While there he began teaching regular online courses for Nazarene Theological Seminary, Nazarene Bible College, and Indiana Wesleyan University, and as well as occasional courses for Northwest Nazarene University, Simpson University, and George Fox Evangelical Seminary. Rhonda worked as a nurse at several elementary schools. In 2011, they returned to Idaho to pastor the Buhl Church of the Nazarene. David continued teaching online courses and Rhonda worked at the St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center as an acute medical nurse. In 2014, David became a full-time hospice chaplain.
During their eight years in the US, missions was never far from their mind. They hosted many missionaries in their homes and stayed in contact with many friends and former students from Asia and the Pacific. They are excited that God has opened the door for them to serve as missionaries once again.
David and Rhonda have two children. Their daughter, Shan, graduated from high school in 2015 and lives with them. After suffering many years from uncontrolled epilepsy, last year she underwent a hemispherectomy and has since been enjoying a seizure free life. She enjoys meeting people and working with children. Joel graduated from high school in 2016 and is now attending Northwest Nazarene University where he is majoring in Biology (Pre-med). He plans to become a doctor. His interests include weight lifting and traveling to new places.
David recently had his commentary, 1, 2 Timothy and Titus published in the New Beacon Bible Commentary series. He graduated from Northwest Nazarene University in 1989, Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1992, and earned a Ph.D. in 2000 in Religious Studies (Biblical Interpretation) in the joint program of Iliff School of Theology and the University of Denver.
Rhonda earned a Bachelor of Arts in Compassionate Ministries in 1989 from Northwest Nazarene University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1992 from Rockhurst University and Research College of Nursing. She is a registered nurse and recently completed a certificate in Parish Nursing. Both Rhonda and David are ordained elders in the Church of the Nazarene.
Their vision is to see the church strengthened and the gospel preached through trained and dedicated leaders. They look forward to returning to the Philippines and working with the team in the Philippine Field Office, the two Bible colleges in the Philippines, and the many districts and churches throughout the field.
